Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity Jason Kenney was named Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism following Prime Minister Harper’s Cabinet shuffle earlier this week. Jason Kenney presides over the Calgary Southeast riding where he won the most recent election in his riding with a sizeable 76 percent of the vote.

As a Calgary M.P. for over a decade, Kenney is highly receptive to the impact that growing labour shortages have had on Alberta’s economy as well as the need to relieve pressures by facilitating the entry and retention of foreign workers. It is predicted that Kenney’s pre-existing duties as Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity) will be subsumed within his current role as Minister for what is now Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. Kenney’s prior responsibilities as Chair of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights and as President and CEO of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation suggests that Kenney may lend this portfolio a pragmatic middle-ground approach that successfully combines the interests of new immigrants as well as short-staffed Canadian employers.
